CONTEMPLATING INFIDELITY

I'm contemplating infidelity.

See, the other day I took a look at my to-be-read pile. So many choices, such variety. And I thought … maybe I could read two of 'em at once?

My mother frowned on this when I was growing up, and that ethic has stuck with me: Read one book at a time. Now that I have two children, I understand what she was trying to prevent. My kids might easily start half a dozen books without finishing them if I let them.

But still. Isn't it better to stick with one novel at a time, to get the full flavor and flow? And isn't it bad manners to cheat?!

Or might it be okay to start, say, Nicholas Sparks' THE NOTEBOOK, which I keep meaning to read but somehow have never gotten to, at the same time I'm reading O'REILLY'S BRIDE by Trish Wylie, which I've already started? Different tones for different moods?

(You'll note that I'm not one of those "read-a-book-in-one-sitting" kinds of readers. For one thing, some of my "sittings" are as short as 15 minutes … I'm a mom, remember?)

So … good idea, or bad idea? Tell the truth. Do YOU read more than one book at a time?

Hi Sierra!

I normally read one book at a time but with the advent of Audiobooks, I now have two 'books' on the go. I borrowed a Kinsella Shopaholic audiobook from the library and loaded it onto my iPod so I can 'read' while Im tidying up, waiting for son to finish footie and its great when doing the groceries. Didn't enjoy that book much though and couldnt wait to get back to reading Ally Blake's Outback Wife. Enjoy Trish's Bride... its a treat :)

I have three books currently on my nightstand: a novel, a nonfiction about ravens and a nonfiction about history's most evil women (don't ask). I admit not looking at the nonfictions in a bit, but I tend to go to them if I'm trying to figure out which novel to pick up next.

I'm one of those people who has to have a book with me all the time no matter where I am because you never know when you might get a few minutes to read. But occassionally I misplace the book I'm reading and have to start on another (I always have one in the glove compartment of the car for emergencies). That's not so bad but when the original book turns up, I'm always left in a quandry. Do I go back to the original book or continue with the one I've started on? It generally depends on how much I'm enjoying the one I've started.

Non fiction's different, obviously. I can have a stack on them on the go at once if there's something in particular I want to know about.

Cathy, yes, nonfiction does offer a nice loophole. I can buy a nonfiction book and not even feel guilty if I never read all of it.

Amanda, you've brought up a quandary I hadn't thought of! I'm glad I'm not the only one who worries about these things. *ggg*

Hmm, maybe a nonfiction book in the glove compartment ... or even a collection of short stories....
